Multiple people have been evacuated from a building in Brampton after a water main break early Wednesday morning.

The break, which happened at around 2:30 a.m., affected tenants of 91 and 81 George Street South in Brampton.

Brampton Fire Platoon Chief Ed Davis told CP24 that the water main break caused a large amount of water and dirt to come out of the building and due to concerns about the structural integrity of the building, the main floor and upper floor was evacuated.

The damage is so severe that the floor has buckled in one of the units, Davis added.

The water has since been shut off and Davis said fire crews are waiting for building inspectors to assess the structural damage.

The Red Cross has been notified and is assisting residents who have been displaced.
