CALGARY -- The man accused of killing a doctor at a Calgary Chinese medical clinic will be seen by a forensic psychiatrist.

Jin Huang, who is 42, appeared in court Friday where the order was made.

The psychiatrist will determine whether a 30-day assessment is needed.

The owner of the Perpetual Wellness clinic, 51-year-old Tiejun Huang, was killed last week in a fight with someone who walked in with a knife.

A woman was injured in the attack and was treated in hospital and released.

Although the victim and the suspect share the same last name, police say they are not believed to be related.

At his previous court appearance Monday, Huang wouldn't say whether he understood the charges facing him and instead asked through a translator if he could remain silent.

His lawyer, Adriano Iovinelli, raised concerns Friday about his client's mental state and called it "an extremely difficult situation."

"People can't image the stress that is caused by this and that's part and parcel of the concern, whether or not the concerns that we have are caused by just being charged with murder or whether or not there's true mental health concerns," he said.

"Right now, it's just a concern that he understands that process, the roles of the Crown, the judge, the defence council and there are apparent mental health concerns and they should be addressed right now before taking any instructions."
