Canadians will now have until May 5th to file their taxes due to an incorrect notice sent out by the Canada Revenue Agency.

The tax deadline was set for April 30 however a notice that was sent out across the country on April 24  falsely indicated that the deadline was May 5.

As a result, the CRA has confirmed that Canadians who file before midnight on May 5 won’t be penalized.

"The CRA takes full responsibility for the error and our first priority is to ensure that no Canadian is negatively affected," a statement on the CRA's website read.

"The CRA sincerely regrets and apologizes for any confusion this may have caused."

Last year, the Heartbleed computer bug forced the CRA to shut down its E-File system and extend the tax deadline to May 5.
