A driver escaped unharmed through his window after his car fell into a sinkhole in a parking lot in front of a building in the city’s west end early Wednesday morning.

It happened off Todd Bayliss Boulevard in the vicinity of Black Creek Drive and Eglinton Avenue at around 7 a.m.

The driver was the owner of the building and had just driven into the parking lot to investigate some water and sand that he had spotted when his car suddenly began to sink. He was not injured in the incident.

“I was going to work at a different location and office and as I drove by I saw a lot of water and sand in the parking lot, so I drove in to inspect and see what it was,” the driver told CP24. “As I was driving the car just sort of went down like it had taken a jump in a pool, just straight down.”

A Metrolinx crew was sent to the scene to investigate whether the sinkhole is connected to the nearby construction of the Eglinton Crosstown line, however spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins told CP24 that no link was found.

Police are urging drivers in the area to use caution.
