Charges may be filed against the owner of a Kensington Market row house where a tenant was forced to leap from a second floor window in order to escape a raging fire earlier this week.

Toronto Fire Services told CP24 on Sunday that they are looking to pursue fire code charges against Jianwen Tao following the two-alarm blaze at the building on Kensington Avenue near Dundas Street on Thursday morning.

According to Toronto Fire Services, the charges could relate to the absence of a fire exit on the second floor, where the tenant jumped from.

At the height of Thursday morning’s fire, 12 fire trucks and 45 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Though no serious injuries were reported, one firefighter did require medical treatment after the landing between the second and third floors collapsed.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the two-alarm blaze.
