Parking illegally while running in to a store or coffee shop during rush-hour is about to get a whole lot pricier — even if you are only there for a minute.

Under new rules that will take effect this week, the City of Toronto is hiking the fine for parking illegally during rush hour to a fixed amount of $150, up from $60.

The beefed-up rush hour fine will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday.

“There are far too many drivers that think that their coffee that they need to grab while putting their blinkers on and turning a two-lane road into a one-lane road is more important than everybody else that is sharing the road behind them,” Coun. Josh Matlow told CP24 Saturday afternoon. “If they don’t care about everybody else maybe they will care about their pocketbook.”

Under the new rules, parking enforcement officers will also be given the ability to issue tickets for things like expired registration stickers and the go-ahead to have cars with a record of at least three unpaid parking tickets towed.

According to Matlow, the changes are part of a wider revision of city parking policies that will be made public Tuesday.

“I think the average Torontonian follows the rules, but there are some people who don’t care about when they need to get their tags and they don’t care about where they leave their cars. And that is who we are targeting,” Matlow said. “Those who follow the rules and want a functioning city should have nothing to worry about with these new changes.”
