The CNE says large crowds prompted organizers to shut down the midway early Tuesday night.

As part of the CNE's Youth Day, attendees 19 years old and younger were admitted to the carnival for free and due to the success of the promotion, organizers opted to close up shop an hour early due to safety concerns.

"After a positive response to today’s Youth Day, CNE organizers are winding down operations slightly earlier than usual," a statement on the CNE's website said.

"This action is not due to any particular threat or incident, but simply to ensure the safety of our guests and to facilitate the exit of a large number of people. Safety is the number one priority at the CNE."

Police confirmed that the crowds at the event were large and said there was a minor disturbance reported on the grounds yesterday.
