The CNE was shut down almost three hours early on Tuesday night after reports of overcrowding and fighting inside.

Police said there was no risk to public safety, but officers mounted on horseback and others were being sent to the Exhibition grounds to disperse large crowds

Const. Craig Brister said a number of fights occurred inside the grounds and no injuries were reported. A call reporting gunshots fired on the grounds was deemed to be false.

Brister said no one was arrested and no weapons were recovered.

Fleet Street and Strachan Avenue were closed to allow pedestrians to exit the area.

CNE General Manager Virigina Ludy told CP24 that the grounds were closed on youth day during the 2015 exhibition as well.

The CNE was hosting its annual youth day, on a weekday where admission is dropped to $6 per person after 5 p.m.

CNE organizers said they were shutting down to help disperse crowds.

Regularly, the CNE gates close at 10 p.m., but rides and other attractions run until midnight for those already inside.
