Police say a 25-year-old Courtice man suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed in a park on Tuesday evening.

Durham Regional Police say the victim, a male suspect who is also 25-years-old and a female acquaintance met in a park near Firwood and Devondale avenues in Courtice sometime before 6 p.m. Police allege the two men started to argue, and the argument escalated into a physical fight.

Police allege the suspect stabbed the victim in the abdomen. The victim was taken to local hospital for treatment.

The suspect fled the scene but was found by police near his home and arrested. The weapon used has not yet been recovered. Police say the victim and the suspect were known to each other.

Tyler Smith of Courtice has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for committing an offence. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
