The number of deaths resulting from distracted driving on Ontario roads has doubled the number resulting from drunk driving so far this year, Ontario Provincial Police say.

According to data released Tuesday, OPP have investigated 38 road deaths in which an inattentive driver was involved so far in 2016 compared to 19 deaths in which a drunk driver was involved.

If the trend continues, it will be the first time that the number of distracted driving deaths have doubled the number of drunk driving deaths on Ontario roads.

“Don’t be a passenger of a distracted driver. Recognize that they are endangering your life. Speak up and insist that they focus on the road and on safe driving. By not doing so, you are contributing to the problem,” Provincial Commander of Traffic Safety and Operational Support Brad Blair said in a press release announcing the numbers. “Since 2009, our officers have investigated more than 600 road deaths that involved an inattentive driver. Consider how many of those innocent lives could have been saved had someone else in the vehicle intervened.”

The release of the startling numbers highlighting the prevalence of inattentive drivers comes as OPP get set to kickoff an annual distracted driving blitz over the Labour Day weekend.

In the news release, the OPP say that the public must have a “a heightened awareness of the prevalence of distracted drivers and the risks they pose on our roads.”
