Frigid Arctic winds are expected to plunge large swaths of southern Ontario into a deep freeze this week.

Environment Canada previously issued a special weather statement for Toronto, warning of extreme cold, brisk winds but that has since been lifted.

Canada’s national weather agency predicts temperatures will fall well below average for early January. The mercury is expected to dip to -20 C or below in most regions expect those along the shorelines of the Great Lakes.

A snow squall watch is in effect for Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and the Halton-Peel region. These watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that can produce near-zero visibility.

It could get as cold as -30 in Eastern Ontario and Algonquin on Thursday morning.
