A stray deer was rescued from a backyard in Whitby Tuesday after the startled creature leaped a fence and landed in a swimming pool.

The deer took a plunge after officers and animal control workers arrived at the home of a neighbor on Fallingbrook Street who called police after noticing the creature in the yard.

Police and animal control devised a plan to try and contain the deer so that it wouldn’t wander off toward traffic on Taunton Road.

But when officers slowly approached, the animal became startled and leaped over a fence, landing in a neighbour’s pool.

Officers pursued the deer and tranquilized her while she was still in the water. They then used a pool skimmer to keep her in the shallow end until the tranquilizer kicked in.

The deer was then pulled from the water and driven up north, where she was released.
