Toronto voters believe the downtown relief line trumps all transit priorities, including the Scarborough subway, according to a recent poll conducted by Forum Research Inc.

Of those surveyed in the poll, which was conducted on April 15, one half agreed that the DRL is the most important transit project with just one quarter ranking the Scarborough subway as a higher priority.

Close to 50 per cent of voters also believed that the best solution to congestion problems is more subways. Of the 882 Toronto voters who were randomly sampled, 20 per cent thought the answer to clogged transit routes is additional LRT projects and 18 per cent believed expanding bus service across the city is the appropriate solution.

“There is obviously a lot of support out there across the city for a mayoral candidate who puts the DRL on the front burner, and risks the heat from Scarborough. While residents of that community see their subway as their entitlement, the rest of the city know the Yonge line needs to be relieved of crowding,” Lorne Bozinoff, president and founder of Forum Research, said in a release.

“It is interesting to note that candidate Chow’s idea for increased bus service will be especially popular on the mayor’s home turf in Etobicoke.”

The poll is considered accurate plus or minus 4 per cent 19 times out of 20.
