A 23-year-old man has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle rollover on Highway 404 near Steeles Avenue.

The rollover happened in the southbound lanes of the highway around 8 a.m.

“The vehicle lost control for unknown reasons, rolled over – you can see it came to rest in the middle of the lane,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CP24 at the scene.

He said a second vehicle was involved and sustained only minor damage.

No other injuries were reported.

Schmidt said the investigation into the rollover is still in its early stages and it’s too early to say what caused the incident.

“We’ll be looking into all aspects regarding speed, alcohol, distraction, aggressive driving and anything else that may have contributed to it. We don’t have any answers right now,” Schmidt said.

He said a collision reconstruction team will be going through the evidence to try and piece together what happened.

All southbound lanes of Highway 404 were closed at Steeles Avenue for several hours following the rollover. The road fully reopened shortly before noon.
