First he was a city councillor, then he became a Twitter celebrity and a noted Drake defender and now Norm Kelly has added a new title to his CV: battle rap star.

Kelly, a former deputy mayor who represents Scarborough—Agincourt on council, made a surprise appearance at the King of the Dot rap battle at the Mod Club on Friday night, walking into the venue to an eruption of applause as Toronto’s Kid Twist took on Philadelphia’s Rone.

Following the contest, Kelly took to Twitter to thank the crowd “for the love” and give a “shout out” to Kid Twist. In response, Kid Twist tweeted at Kelly thanking for coming out and proclaiming that the pair made battle rap history together.

Of course, Friday night wasn’t the first time Kelly has interjected himself into a battle between a Toronto and a Philadelphia rapper.

Last month, Kelly made headlines when he got into a Twitter feud with Meek Mill after the Philadelphia rapper suggested that Drake doesn’t write his own lyrics.

“Drake is a remarkably talented young man, he has made Torontonians proud, and the brand that he is displaying to the rest of the world is that this is a hip, if that word is still even in fashion, place to live. And then all of a sudden this guy who I have never heard of throws a grenade at Drake and I thought ‘hey, what are you thinking?,’” Kelly told CP24 at the time. “Drake makes no bones about it; he is Toronto and I wanted to defend both Drake and Toronto against this unwarranted puzzling attack on him.”

King of the Dot presents World Domination 5 will continue at the Mod Club tonight.

To borrow a phrase from a recent Drake song, it’s unclear whether Kelly plans to go “Back to Back.”
