A tornado, believed to be an EF1, touched down in New Tecumseth Tuesday afternoon, a representative with Environment Canada has confirmed.

Environment Canada's Peter Kimbell said the tornado hit around the 15th Sideroad and 4th Line area, east of Tottenham, at around 3:30 p.m.

An investigator at the scene found a five-kilometre storm track and made the preliminary rating that an EF1 tornado – with wind speeds of between 135 to 175 kilometres per hour – had touched down, Kimbell said.

“It is getting dark, so it’s hard to make conclusions with short time frames,” Kimbell told CP24 in a phone interview Tuesday night.

At least one house in the area had significant damage to the garage, Kimbell said.

In a release issued shortly after 9 p.m., Environment Canada confirmed that a riding stable and trees in the area were also damaged.

Further investigation will be conducted Wednesday, the weather agency said in the release.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

The tornado comes one week after an EF2 tornado struck Angus - located about 35 kilometres north of New Tecumseth - damaging more than 100 homes.

It is the fifth confirmed tornado of the season.
