An elderly man who was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being rescued from a two-alarm fire at an east-end apartment building on Friday morning is now in stable condition, police say.

The fire broke out on the seventh floor of a Toronto Community Housing building located at 444 Lumsden Avenue, near Main Street and Danforth Avenue, shortly before 6 a.m. Friday morning.

Toronto Paramedic Services says the man suffered significant smoke inhalation and has been rushed to a trauma centre.

A child was also treated on scene.

Police say the elderly man lived in an a bachelor apartment in the building and the fire appears to have started in a couch. Careless smoking is the suspected cause, however police say the Office of the Fire Marshal will make the final determination.

Toronto Fire Capt. Dave Eckerman says the fire was extinguished at around 6:30 a.m. and police did not need to evacuate the building.

Lumsden Avenue between Main Street and Eastdale Avenue was closed to traffic for the fire investigation.
