An elderly woman was killed in Markham Tuesday morning after she became trapped underneath a vehicle.

The 77-year-old victim was walking along a crosswalk on Carlton Road at around 9 a.m. when she was struck by a black Mitsubishi that was making a left turn from Central Park Drive.

The woman, whose name has not been released by police, died at the scene. The 45-year-old woman who was driving the car was not injuried, police said.

The area will remain closed to traffic as investigators reconstruct the collision scene in an effort to determine how the incident took place. Witnesses to the collision are asked to call police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7704.

Police have not said what charges -- if any -- the driver will face.
