Toronto police say an elderly woman has died in hospital after she was struck by a vehicle in North York Tuesday morning.

It happened near Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue at around 7 a.m.

Const. Clint Stibbe said a Chevrolet SUV was heading northbound on Bathurst Street when the collision occurred.

"As that vehicle approached what is considered to be a crossing area-- it is basically a centre island with some guardrails on it meant for pedestrians to get from the east side over to the west side of Bathurst (Street)-- a pedestrian stepped off of that centre island and was struck by the northbound motor-vehicle that was in the left lane," Stibbe said.

The woman was taken to a trauma centre, where she later died.

"We are currently performing collision reconstruction in the area," Stibbe added.

The age and identity of the woman have not yet been released by police.

Roads in the area were closed as police investigated the incident.
