Environment Canada is looking into reports of a tornado touching down north of Orillia Friday afternoon.

The storm was reported on the eastern side of Six Mile Lake in the Port Severn area shortly after 2 p.m.

“We have eye witness reports suggesting that hundreds of trees have come down in that area and some power lines as well. At this point we are just trying to find out more information,” Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson told CP24 Friday afternoon.

The Port Severn area was under a severe thunderstorm warning along with most of cottage country when the tornado reportedly touched down.

According to Coulson, that storm cell has now moved to the southeast and is affecting northern York and Durham regions.

"Keep a close eye on the sky and if threatening weather does approach your location make sure you are able to get into a well built structure," Coulson said.
