An Etobicoke teacher is facing a number of charges in connection with an alleged sexual assault.

The man was released on $2,500 bail Thursday on the condition that he has no direct or indirect contact with the complainant, not be within 500 metres of the complainant’s home, place of education or employment, and not be in the presence of anyone under age 16 unless accompanied by an adult.

Toronto police said the victim is 13 years old and are investigating to determine if there are more victims.

The accused is a teacher at Hollycrest Middle School. The Toronto District School Board says he has been placed on home assignment, given the seriousness of the allegations and out of concern for students’ safety, and will not be at Hollycrest or any other TDSB school till an investigation has been completed.

Ryan Bird, a spokesperson for the TDSB, confirmed that the accused has been a contract teacher at Hollycrest for nine years.

He added that it is difficult to alert students and parents because of the summer holidays.

“Typically what we would do is send a hard-copy of a letter home with students to parents, but in this case, school is not sitting,” Bird said. “So, of course if any parents have any questions or concerns, they are welcome to call the school or talk to Toronto police directly.”

The Children’s Aid Society of Toronto has been notified.

Joseph Diletto, 34, has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation.

His lawyer, Louis Strezos, said Thursday that his client was arrested Wednesday night and will be vigorously defending against the charges.

“He’s had a difficult night, but he’ll get home. He’s got a lot of family support. He’s got support from friends… and we’ll address these matters at the appropriate time,” said Strezos.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-2200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
