An extreme cold weather alert has been issued for Toronto in anticipation of frigid overnight temperatures.

The expected high for today is – 3 C, however Environment Canada is forecasting a low of – 13 C overnight before the temperature warms up to a high of - 1 C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The warning comes just two days after an extreme cold weather alert that had been in effect for more than two weeks was lifted.

Toronto and the GTA is also under a special weather statement ahead of a system that could bring a mix of snow, freezing rain and ice pellets to the region, beginning Tuesday afternoon.

During an extreme cold weather alert, additional services are activated for the homeless including the addition of extra shelter spaces, increased street outreach and the opening of two 24-hour warming centres.
