March may be on its way out, but colder temperatures are staging a return.

Toronto's medical officer of health issued an extreme cold weather alert for Toronto Friday morning with icy temperatures expected overnight.

A low of -12 C is expected in the city tonight, but it is expected to feel more like -20 C with the wind chill.

The alert ensures expanded shelter space is in place for the city's homeless population during the icy weather.

This is the city’s 39th extreme cold weather alert this year.

While temperatures have been milder for much of March, the temperature has yo-yoed, with a series of milder and cooler days.

While the weekend is expected to be sunny, it will be cool.

For Saturday, Environment Canada is predicting a high of -1 C and a low of -8 C. Sunday is expected to be slightly warmer, with a high of 4 C expected.

Slightly warmer temperatures are expected through next week, but they will come with a mix of possible flurries and rain showers.
