Fire crews are on the scene of a two-alarm blaze at a home in East York.

The fire broke out at a residence on Torrens Avenue, near Pape Avenue and O'Connor Drive on Tuesday morning.

Toronto Fire Services Capt. Mike Strapko told CP24 that they believe the fire, which likely started in the basement of the home, may have been ignited by candles.

The fire was reported by a resident of the home, who managed to get out safely, Strapko added.

The resident did inhale a significant amount of smoke while trying to extinguish the fire, Strapko said, but it is not known if he was taken to hospital or is being treated on scene.

A Hazmat unit was also called in after the occupant of the home reported smelling gas.

Torrens Avenue has been closed at Donlands Avenue.
