A turf maintenance building at a golf course in Vaughan has been destroyed by fire but crews have been able to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby administrative building.

The two-alarm fire began in the building at the rear of the Eagles Nest Golf Club near Major MacKenzie Drive West and Dufferin Street at around 4:15 a.m. and quickly spread.

According to Vaughan firefighters, the building was entirely engulfed by the time crews arrived, making a defensive approach necessary.

At the height of the fire, 28 firefighters were at the scene. The blaze took four hours to get under control.

Fertilizer and other chemicals were stored inside the building. Earlier Tuesday, Chief Larry Bentley told CP24 that steps were taken to prevent firefighters from being exposed to any hazardous materials.

An investigation has since determined that the chemicals posed no risk to public safety, however.

Nobody was in the building at the time that the fire broke out and no injuries have been reported.

Bentley said firefighters expect to be on the scene putting out hot spots for "the majority of the day."

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
