Firefighters did not locate anybody in a Scarborough home following a blaze on Tuesday afternoon despite initial fears that someone may have been trapped inside.

The fire started near the back of a home on Rural Avenue near Midland and Sheppard avenues at around 1:30 pm. and soon spread to engulf most of the structure.

According to Captain David Eckerman, a 911 caller initially indicated that there may have been someone inside the home. Eckerman said that firefighters did locate anybody inside, though.

“We have searched the entire unit from the basement to the upper floor and no one has been found at this point,” he said.

Eckerman said that the home is “not a complete loss” but he said there “will be smoke and water damage” throughout the property.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

“I think it is safe to say that nobody will be inhabiting it today or in the next couple of weeks,” Eckerman said.

Though no serious injuries were reported as a result of the fire, Toronto Fire says that several people were treated for minor smoke inhalation.
