Peel Regional Police say an Air Canada flight en route to New Delhi was diverted back to Toronto early this morning after an unruly passenger allegedly assaulted a flight attendant.

In a news release issued Wednesday morning, investigators said at around 12:42 a.m. a flight had to be diverted back to Pearson International Airport after a passenger exhibited "assaultive and belligerent behaviour" toward a flight attendant.

The plane, according to police, landed back at the airport without incident and the flight attendant received medical attention.

Jaskaran Sidhu, a 47-year-old Alberta resident, has been charged with mischief, assault causing bodily harm and endangering the safety of an aircraft in connection with the incident. Police say the man is being held until his bail hearing in Brampton Wednesday.

The diversion marked the second time passengers on the flight were delayed yesterday.

The plane was initially scheduled to take off earlier Tuesday but poor weather conditions prompted Air Canada to cancel the flight shortly after the plane made it to the runway.

The flight will now depart from Pearson International Airport at noon today.
