Heads were shaking after people met Mayor Rob Ford during an unusual fundraiser for a Toronto charity Tuesday.

Hundreds queued at city hall to get their hands on a limited-edition Ford bobblehead that may one day become a collector’s item.

With only 1,000 of the knick-knacks available at the mayor’s office, more than 100 people were in line before the figurines were supposed to go on sale at 9 a.m. The line swelled to more than 300 people before the sale began at 10:30 a.m.

Until the final bobblehead was sold at about 3:30 p.m., the mayor autographed the dolls and T-shirts and posed for pictures with those who waited in a line that continued to grow until it was cut off about two hours earlier.

Ford supporter John Rowland, who was third in line, arrived at 6 a.m. because he wanted to show his support for the embattled mayor amid an ongoing crack cocaine scandal.

“He’s obviously been through quite a few personal problems, he’s finally come clean on it … so now we need to support him on it,” Rowland told CP24 reporter Katie Simpson. “I’m hoping that he is going to actually stay here in office and not take some time off. I think some people need to work as part of their therapy.”

At $20 a pop, the so-called “Robbie Bobbies” were expected to sell out fast. Some observers say the doll looks more like the mayor's brother, Coun. Doug Ford.

Proceeds from the sale will be given to United Way Toronto. Each bobblehead cost $8.20 to make, so $11.80 from every sale is being given to the non-profit organization, the mayor's office told CP24.

That amounts to a donation of just under $12,000.

As the bobbleheads were doing brisk sales, the mayor's office announced plans to sell "Ford Nation" T-shirts, starting Wednesday. Ford also promised to sell more bobbleheads.

Bobbleheads offered on Kijiji

People are trying to cash in on the rare bobblehead and Ford's popularity amid the scandal.

Before the public sale began, someone claiming to have two of the figurines offered them for sale at an inflated price on Kijiji. It is not known if the listing is legitimate.

The seller is seeking $500 per bobblehead but is promising to give the cash to a good cause, according to a listing titled "Crack Smoking Mayor Rob Ford Bobble Head Doll."

"When sold, I will donate all monies made back to a charitable organization that deals with addiction," the seller wrote in the classified ad. "It's a win-win for everyone, even for Rob Ford."

In less than an hour, a listing on eBay fetched 17 bids, with the top one coming in at $155. The seller is vowing to donate a percentage of the profit to the United Way.

Sales of other types of Ford memorabilia appear to be peaking amid his crack cocaine scandal.

Elsewhere, an eBay user is selling a business card from Ford's days as an Etobicoke councillor.

About 11 hours before the online auction expired, the latest bid was $27.

In a listing for the item, the seller says Ford handed out the business card at the "2010 Pug Talk event" at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

People have also been selling buttons or T-shirt poking fun at the mayor's troubles.
