A former budget chief and long-time city councillor has been put forth as the next chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Mike Del Grande was tapped for the role during the board’s annual caucus meeting on Thursday night, according to a press release.

Del Grande previously served as the city councillor for Ward 39, Scarborough Agincourt but did not run for re-election in October, choosing instead to run for a seat on the TCDSB, where he was a trustee from 1994 to 2003.

The appointment of Del Grande as TCDSB chair must still be ratified.

“I saw some fundamentals that need to be corrected, and a ship that needed to be steered,” Del Grande said of his decision to return to the board in the press release. “We need to re-affirm the vision of the Toronto Catholic District School Board to have a system that is Christ-centered, student focused, demonstrating a clear sense of purpose.”

Del Grande, who was Rob Ford’s budget chief for the first two years of his term, will have his work cut out for him at the TCDSB.

Earlier this month the board revealed that “inaccurate calculations” and “gaps in financial reporting” have led to an unexpected $8.9 million deficit for the 2013-2014 year.

The new board of trustees will be officially sworn in on Dec. 1.
