KINGSTON, Ont. -- Police in Kingston, Ont., are warning of the dangers posed by discarded syringes after a girl accidentally stuck herself with one in a downtown park.

Investigators received a report from a parent saying the girl picked up a used syringe and stuck herself in the finger with it on Thursday afternoon.

They say the parents found several needles under a tree where children regularly play.

The child was treated in hospital and police say she'll continue to have further tests for infection.

Police are appealing to people who use syringes in public areas to dispose of them in a biohazard bin or use the Kingston Street Health Centre's needle-exchange program.
