A fire tore through a home in Hamilton overnight, causing an estimated $300,000 in damage to the property.

The blaze at a home on Upper Gage Avenue near Stone Church Road began at around 3:30 a.m. and by the time crews arrived on scene it had spread throughout most of the building.

According to Hamilton Fire, seven people and two dogs were in the home but were able to escape safely.

Hamilton Fire says that the main part of the home is “totally gutted” following the blaze. Hamilton Fire also says that a small amount of damage was caused to an adjoining unit on the east side of the home.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
