A watch continues today for an escaped peacock that has so far managed to evade capture since escaping from its enclosure at the High Park Zoo several days ago.

The bird grabbed headlines Friday after images of it strutting atop rooftops in Parkdale were posted to social media.

Despite several sightings and efforts by Toronto Animal Services to corral the bird, it flew away each time city staff got near.

On Saturday, excited neighbourhood children picked up the bird’s trail and tried to follow its path through the neighbourhood, even giving the large bird a variety of pet names, including “Prince” and “Carl.”

According to High Park Zoo staff, the three-year-old peacock has called High park home for about a year and does not have a name.

For its part, Toronto Animal Services said Saturday that staff won’t come to try and retrieve the bird unless it is stuck in an enclosed area, for fear of driving it even farther from home.

City staff said they believe the peacock will eventually try and return to the zoo. They advised people to call 311 of they see the peacock stuck somewhere.
