Homicide detectives are investigating after a man in his 20s was found dead inside his North York apartment overnight.

Officers responding to a 911 call found the victim suffering from a fatal gunshot wound in a ninth floor unit in a building on Empress Avenue near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue at around 3 a.m.

Police say they have not yet spoken to the woman who made the original 911 call and are appealing to that party to come forward.

“We are in the very preliminary stages of the investigation and we seeking information from anyone who may have seen or heard anything from that building, and in particular the 911 caller who notified emergency dispatch,” Det. Scott Purches told CP24 Sunday morning. “Given the information that was relayed we are very interested in speaking to that person.”

The death has not been ruled a homicide at this point and Purches told CP24 that homicide detectives have been called in as a matter of "investigative necessity" only.

Purches added that offices are currently canvassing the building for witnesses as they seek to determine whether foul play may have played a role in the man's death.

"We need to track down and determine exactly what happened before we make the determination that it is a homicide," he said.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
