Police have charged a 40-year-old Toronto neurosurgeon with first-degree murder after the body of a woman was discovered near a roadway in Kleinburg on Thursday afternoon.
The body, belonging to an adult woman, was discovered by a passerby in a wooded area near a ravine off Highway 27 and Nashville Road at around 3:30 p.m.
On Friday night, Toronto Police identified the victim as a 40-year-old female phyisician from Toronto.
Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan told CP24 the victim was last heard from on Wednesday evening. She is a family physician who works at The Scarborough Hospital.
She did not show up to work on Thursday.
The cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma. Ryan said investigators believe she was killed in her home, located in North York, sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
A suspect identified as Mohammed Shamji, 40, of Toronto was arrested and charged on Friday. Ryan said he was taken into custody at a coffee shop in the area of Lakeshore Road East and Highway 10 in Mississauga.
Mohammed is also a doctor, a neurosurgeon who works at Toronto Western Hospital.
Mohammed is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
