York Regional Police's homicide unit is investigating after an elderly woman was found dead at a Richmond Hill apartment building early Saturday morning.

The woman's body was discovered inside a unit on the second-floor of the building, which is located at 45 Baif Boulevard near Yonge Street and Weldrick Road.

Speaking to reporters at the scene Saturday evening, Const. Andy Pattenden said officers first became involved in the investigation at around 5 a.m. when a 23-year-old man turned up at a local hospital suffering from undisclosed injuries.

After speaking to the man, Pattenden said police received information that led them to the Richmond Hill apartment complex, where they found the woman without vital signs at around 6:30 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was taken into custody after the discovery was made however police say charges have not yet been laid.

Police are not looking for any additional suspects.

Police have released few details about the case but did say there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment unit when officers arrived. Investigators have not disclosed the nature of the woman's injuries.

Pattenden said the woman and the man were known to one another but would not say how they were acquainted. He added that police do not believe this was a "random act."

The name of the woman has not been released as next of kin have not yet been notified.

A post mortem examination has been scheduled for tomorrow to determine a cause of death.

"We are making the appeal for any witnesses, anyone who might have heard anything in the early hours of today, anywhere in the apartment building. Please come forward and contact our homicide unit," Pattenden said.
