The son of an elderly man found dead in Richmond Hill over the weekend has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with his father’s death.

Robert Veltheer, 77, was found inside a residence on Harding Boulevard West, in the Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive area, with obvious signs of trauma shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday.

Police have not released details on the cause of death.

Investigators were actively searching for Veltheer’s son overnight, using a helicopter around the neighbourhood to look for clues to his whereabouts.

“We’re looking to speak to him and see what he can tell us,” York Regional Police Const. Laura Nichol said earlier Monday of the search efforts.

At a news conference Monday morning, she asked for anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact police.

In a release issued around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, police confirmed that 30-year-old Jacob Veltheer had been arrested by police.

According to the release, he was spotted by officers walking on Highway 48, in the area of Holborn Road in East Gwillimbury, at around 1:30 p.m. He was arrested without incident.

He is charged with first-degree murder.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 866-876-5423 ext. 7865 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).

Veltheer’s death was one of five homicides that occurred in the GTA over the weekend.

A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death in Woodbridge early Sunday morning after a fight broke out at an entertainment complex on Interchange Way. Another man was also wounded but is expected to survive.

Two men, a 17 year old and a 33 year old, were killed in Mississauga in separate incidents Sunday.

Toronto's homicide unit was called in to investigate after a man's body was found at a home on Wakunda Place in the city’s east end.
