An overnight house fire that sent a family to hospital as a precaution was sparked by ashes that weren’t properly discarded, Toronto police say.

Police told CP24 the homeowner cleaned his fireplace and put the ashes into a box, but the box caught fire.

Three people and a pet dog escaped the house on Melody Road, near Weston Road and Highway 401, before firefighters arrived at about midnight.

The family members were taken to hospital as a precaution, and no serious injuries were reported, a police spokesperson said.

Before it was extinguished by firefighters the small fire in the home’s basement caused about $20,000 worth of damage, mostly due to smoke, police said.

Fire in vacant house

Later Tuesday morning, fire crews were called to a home on Deloraine Avenue, near Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue, at about 3:50 a.m.

Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm blaze in the basement of the house, which was unoccupied, according to neighbours.

No injuries were reported.
