If the City of Toronto’s inside workers fail to reach a new labour agreement Saturday, thousands of municipal workers could hit the picket lines.

Here’s how a city work stoppage might affect you.

CUPE 79 (Inside workers) work stoppage would affect:

  • All city-run daycare services
  • Permitting services
  • Programming available at municipal facilities such as community centres, including fitness facilities, camps, arenas, rinks, swimming pools etc.
  • Community Centres not run by boards of management
  • Processing documents such as legal notices or Freedom of Information requests
  • Toronto Archives to close
  • In-person payment of parking tickets

What services will continue to operate

  • The city says services for the homeless, court administration, water services and paramedics will continue to operate normally in the event of a work stoppage.
  • In the event of a winter storm, the city says they have plans in place to maintain road safety across Toronto.
  • City management and non-union personnel would be used to fill some gaps in service during a labour stoppage.
  • Investigations of complaints of unsafe living conditions (broken elevators, no heat, water) will continue however investigations into non-emergency situations or bylaw complaints will be suspended.
  • In the event of an extreme weather alert, cold weather services will be activated, including drop-in centres.
  • The city will continue to issue marriage licences, however wedding chambers at Scarborough, East York and North York civic centres will be closed.
  • The city will continue to issue burial permits.
  • In the event of a labour disruption, parking payment deadlines will not be extended. Payments can be made by phone, mail or online.
  • Property tax and utility bills will also have to be paid by deadline.
  • Libraries will run normally, as they are represented by a separate union local
