A 23-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving causing death and other offences in Monday’s fatal crash at Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West.

Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said the suspect is facing 13 charges for his alleged role in the crash, which killed a man in his 60s, seriously injured a 39-year-old woman and left a man with non-life-threatening injuries.

The three-vehicle crash occurred after a fare dispute involving a taxicab driver and a customer, who drove off in the taxi.

The taxi then collided with a pickup truck, which struck a sport utility vehicle occupied by the man in his 60s and the woman, police said.

The man who was driving the cab fled the scene but was arrested nearby.

Police say they are investigating whether the taxi went through a red light just before the collision.

In addition to impaired driving causing death, Abokar Ahmed Ali is charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and theft over $5,000, police said.

Ali was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
