A three-storey row house in Kensington Market sustained significant damage following a two-alarm fire early Thursday morning.

The fire broke out inside a home at 39 Kensington Avenue at around 6 a.m.

The fire created black smoke that could be seen throughout the downtown core Thursday morning and when crews arrived on scene, flames were shooting out of windows on the second floor of the building.

Toronto Fire Services confirms everyone in the home got out safely.

“This is a typical downtown row housing fire that appears to have burned out the stairwell going from the second to the third floor," Toronto Fire Services District Chief Kevin Shaw told CP24 at the scene.

"It migrated up through the walls, across the ceiling to the far unit. We had crews there that did a really great job, stopped it, pushed it back so the bulk of the damage is just … in the south unit."

At the height of the fire, 12 fire trucks and 45 firefighters were battling the blaze.

One firefighter was injured after the landing between the second and third floor collapsed, however Shaw said the injuries are minor.

One resident of the home helped rescue a roommate from the blaze after he found his way to safety.

"I started shouting at the top of my lungs for everyone to get out and luckily everybody did," the man said.

"Later on, my roommate opened her window and that’s of course when she jumped out."

The man was waiting in the alley below and caught the woman as she fell.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
