Police say a 12-year-old boy is dead and a male family member is in custody after a stabbing inside a downtown hotel early Wednesday morning.

The boy was stabbed in the neck inside the Cambridge Suites Hotel on Richmond Street East near Victoria Street at around 5:50 a.m.

Following the stabbing, the boy was rushed to hospital via emergency run but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

A source previously told CP24 the stabbing occurred inside a room on the hotel's eighth floor.

“This incident involves family members who were guests at the hotel. Because of the age of the victim I can only release very limited information,” Det. Omar Khan told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. “I can, however, say that at this time I don’t believe there is any immediate threat to public safety.”

The male suspect was taken into custody at the scene; however charges have not been filed at this time and police are continuing to investigate.

Khan would not say what led police to the suspect, but noted that officers have already spoken to several witnesses.

“All I will release at this time is that it is a family situation,” he said.
