One male is currently in police custody in connection with a fire that has destroyed a building in Milton.

According to Halton police, officers were called to the currently unoccupied building on Britannia Road at around 6 p.m.

The building was once home to the Percy W. Merry Public School.

The cause of the fire, which Halton police have called suspicious, is currently unknown.

One male is currently in custody in connection with the investigation, Halton police Sgt. Tom Reilly confirmed.

Milton Fire Department Chief Brian Ellsworth said that at the height of the blaze 40 firefighters were on scene.

He expects crews to remain at the site for hours.

The area remains closed as police continue their investigation.
