Police have issued an arrest warrant for a suspect after a 17-year-old high school student was slashed outside of his school in Oshawa on Thursday morning.

Durham Regional Police say they were called to Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School near Rossland and Stevenson roads at about 11 a.m.

Investigators said the victim was standing near a driveway adjacent to the school when a suspect who was a passenger in a blue van pulled up to the victim and stabbed him in his side.

The victim made his way inside the school where emergency crews were notified of the attack.

Police say they believe the victim was targeted.

Paramedics transported him to local hospital for treatment. He was conscious and breathing following the incident and police said Friday he remained in hospital.

A suspect identified by police as Randy Chessman, of Simcoe Street North in Oshawa, is wanted on the strength of a warrant on charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault and weapons dangerous.

He is described as a white man standing five-feet-ten inches tall, with a medium build. He is urged to turn himself in to authorities.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Const. Dalziel at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 1832, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
