A 29-year-old man is in custody after a convict was attacked during his sentencing hearing in an Oshawa courtroom on Tuesday afternoon, Durham Regional Police say.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. at the Durham Regional Courthouse, located on Bond Street East, according to police.

Police said a sentencing hearing was underway in the courtroom when a suspect sitting in the public gallery allegedly leapt over the barrier and charged towards the glass-encased prisoner’s box where the convict was sitting.

Special constables in the courtroom immediately tackled the suspect, who allegedly broke a portion of the prisoner’s box glass.

One of the special constables suffered minor injuries as he attempted to restrain the suspect, police said.

A suspect identified as Garrett Naylor was arrested and charged with assault and mischief under $5,000. He was later released on an undertaking with conditions.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Patterson at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5100, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
