A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a number of car fires believed to have been deliberately set overnight in the north part of the city.

Firefighters put out two vehicle fires that appear to have been set alight in the Jane Street and Wilson Avenue area early Sunday.

The first call came in around 1:50 a.m. on Richard Clark Drive. Three fire trucks and 16 firefighters responded to put out the blaze. Damage was estimated at $15,000.

The second call came in a round 2 a.m. on Calais Avenue. Three fire trucks responded to put out that fire.

About 25 minutes later, firefighters responded to a call about someone lighting a fire in the woods at the back of a property a block away on Canton Avenue.

Arson is suspected in all three fires and the Office of the Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate.

Police confirmed Sunday morning that a man who lives in the neighbourhood has been arrested with the help of witness descriptions. He is also accused of setting fires in the neighbourhood earlier on in the month.

Wilfred Akiwenzie, 30, of Toronto, has been charged with seven counts of arson.

Akiwenzie is scheduled to appear in court at Toronto North Court on Monday, August 25th, 2014.

On Aug. 10 police issued a warning to residents to remain vigilant in light of the fires.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call police.
