COLLINGWOOD, Ont. - A 53-year-old man has been charged after police say he left his dog locked in a parked car on a hot day in Collingwood, Ont.

Police say they were called to a downtown parking lot on Friday afternoon after someone spotted the dog inside the vehicle.

They say the caller was able to free the dog before officers arrived and gave the heavily panting pet some water to cool down.

Police say they could not find the dog's owner so they took it to the local detachment.

The owner eventually called to report that his dog had been stolen, and when he came to pick up his pet, he was charged under the town's responsible pet ownership bylaw.

The dog did not suffer any lasting health effects.
