MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- A 28-year-old Ajax, Ont., man faces charges after allegedly driving the wrong way and narrowly avoiding collisions on Highway 401 on Saturday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to numerous 911 calls of a vehicle driving the wrong way in west Toronto near Islington Avenue.

Police say witnesses reported having to swerve out of the way to avoid a collision.

Officers eventually located and pulled the vehicle over in Mississauga near Mississauga Road.

Police say Ricardo Renaldo Roberts was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample.

Police are thanking witness for reporting the driver and helping to safely end the situation, which they say "could have easily ended in a fatal collision."
