Police have charged the father of a little girl who died in Scarborough earlier this week.

Evangeline Adotey, 6, was found in distress after police responded to a hotel in the Warden Avenue and Highway 401 area around 4 p.m. on Feb. 3.

Police went looking for the girl and her brother after their mother was alarmed to learn their father had picked them up from school unexpectedly.

The girl was rushed to hospital, where she later died. The young boy was also taken to hospital but was released shortly afterwards. The father was taken to hospital where he remained under police custody.

On Monday, neighbours told CTV the incident came as a shock, describing the family as friendly.

Police say Jason Adotey, 35, of Toronto, has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

He is scheduled to make a court appearance Feb. 12.
