A man escaped a house fire in Caledon by jumping out of a window early Thursday morning, fire officials say.

Firefighters were called to the burning home on Chinguacousy Road, near King Street, shortly before 4 a.m.

Caledon Fire spokesman Darryl Bailey said early reports indicate that a male occupant was awakened by a smoke detector and then escaped the smoke-filled house by jumping out of a window.

Firefighters encountered the male, who suffered minor injuries, outside the house when they arrived, Bailey told CP24.

Fire crews got about a metre inside the house before they had to retreat because of unsafe conditions, he said.

Firefighters then battled the blaze from the outside. The house was gutted in the blaze.

The cause is under investigation.
