Police say a 22-year-old man who was found dead in a Scarborough park earlier this week was murdered.

A passerby spotted the body of Nitiyand Gary Singh in a heavily wooded area in McCowan Park shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday.

The discovery of Singh’s body came two days after the father of one was reported missing by his family.

At the time, police said the death was suspicious but it has now been ruled a homicide following the completion of an autopsy on Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of death is not being released, though Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone told reporters on Wednesday that an “edged weapon was used.”

Meanwhile, a motive in the attack remains unknown.

According to Carbone, police have received information that Singh was exchanging text messages with a friend over the course of Thursday night with the last message from Singh being sent at around 1 a.m. Friday.

As a result, police looking to speak with anyone who may have seen Singh at around 1 a.m. on Friday or are otherwise aware of his whereabouts at that time.

“We are speaking to witnesses and we still have more people to speak to. We are just appealing to the public with regard to anyone who may have seen him at around 1 a.m.,” Carbone said. “We are trying to track his movements on that day.”

According to Carbone, Singh had “roots” in the neighbourhood surrounding McCowan Park and was known to frequent some of the restaurants and bars at a nearby strip mall at 1347 Danforth Road.
